As you may, or may not know Benjamin and I are gearing up to go on a mission trip to Mexico this Christmas with Homes for the Homeless. (strategic alliance)
I sent off for benjamin's passport as soon as i heard about it... nearly a year ago.
I knew from that moment that wanted to take this first opportunity for him to see the reality of people in great need... and God's heart to bring comfort and hope to them through us.
Although he won't remember it, I am confident that such things imprint the soul of a child.
This afternoon, I am changing benjamin's diaper before his nap and i say (i can't remember why)
"Mama and Benjamin are going to Mexico" He is somewhat familiar with this idea... and knows the concept of a trip because he still remembers our visit to NOLA in May.
So Benjamin says "why Mexico? why Mexico?"
And I tell him "There are some people there who don't have a house to live in. They live in tents, or cardboard... Do you remember your little house that we made from Uncle Luke's box? (He nods) Do you remember how it fell in after it rained, and was ruined? (yes, frowning) Well when it rains, these people don't have anyplace to stay warm and dry" (his little face is screwed up with worry now) "We're going to Mexico to build a little house for them, that will keep them warm and dry." (He smiles, relief written all over him) "Because that is what Jesus would want us to do. That is how we can show them that Jesus cares about them. And we will bring beds for them too, and maybe a little oven's hot (which is what he calls a stove) to cook on..."
"And BALLOONS! mama! I will bring a balloon for them!"
"that is a wonderful idea Benjamin, we will pack balloons for you to give them in your bag."
Beautiful.
I can't wait.
