Two months later: there is no bribing or circustree necessary. He had accidents several times for a couple of days, and then just seemed to figure it out.
Good job little man, we are very proud of you.
And kudos for his Omi's original potty-training advice "just wait till he's ready: when it's the right time for him- it will be no big deal" brilliant.
